Interview with Stefan Rummel, Managing Director, Messe München GmbH
In 2013, an impressive 535,065 visitors from over 200 countries attended bauma. With over 200,000 visitors from outside Germany, the number of international participants was higher than ever before. In total, 3,421 exhibitors from 57 countries presented their latest products and innovations in construction and mining machinery on a record exhibition space of 575,000 square meters. With those numbers, the last edition of bauma broke all previous records for exhibitor numbers, exhibition space and number of visitors.
How has bauma developed over the years?
Messe München has a long tradition when it comes to construction machinery fairs: The first bauma took place in 1954 and occupied 20,000 square meters. Since that time, bauma has grown enormously, and in 2013 it took up 575,000 square meters. In the 1950s, bauma was an annual show. Nowadays it takes place every three years. As one can see, our bauma show never stands still and neither does our company: Over recent years, Messe München has built up global competence in the organization of international trade fairs for construction machinery. The successful concept behind bauma has been transferred to a range of countries outside Germany—namely China, India and South Africa—in each case taking into account the needs of those regional markets.
And now a look forward: What are your expectations for the next bauma?
Apart from a high exhibitor and visitor participation, I expect that bauma 2016 will again be an unforgettable event. This show is without a doubt the most important trade fair worldwide for the construction machinery industry. Moreover, the bauma atmosphere is unique: bauma is huge, it is overwhelming, enormously busy and international—it is simply the biggest show on earth and always a successful business. And that’s exactly what I expect the next bauma to be.
In your opinion, how will the local market develop in the medium term?
According to our partners in the German Engineering Federation, VDMA, in 2014 the German construction equipment industry’s turnover increased by eight per cent and companies are expecting the market to also develop in a positive way in 2015. This doubtlessly is good news, especially with regard to our bauma show in 2016. Thankfully, the sector for construction ma-chinery has proved to be very stable over the last decade and therefore I’m confident that it will stay strong in the future as well.
